Bernie Gunther has been one of my favourite fictional characters, since I read the first book in the series, “March Violets,” in 1989. Over the years, the series has weaved in and out of Gunther’s life and, as such, this is probably not the best book to start with – even if Philip Kerr does a good job of allowing readers to enter the story at any point.
